17th March 2012 MABA Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Anthony Johnson, Nakiea Miller and Angelus Raymundo combined for 22 points in the final quarter to help the AirAsia Philippine Patriots make a come from behind 90-87 win over the Westports Malaysia Dragons at MABA Stadium this afternoon.
Anthony Johnson led all scoring with 34 points, Nakiea Miller had a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds, Angelus Raymundo, who hit all of his six shots, added 12 points for the Patriots.
The Dragons’ top rebounder Brian Williams had to sit out this game due to an ankle injury. Although still recovering from his own minor heel injury, Dragons were able to enlist the help of Donald Little as Williams’ temporary replacement. Little completed his debut with the Dragons with 11 points.
Patrick Cabahug was a big spark for the Dragons in the first quarter. Cabahug came into the game midway in the first quarter to start a 13-1 run. Cabahug scored 9 points in that stretch. But at the 02:09 mark in this quarter, their leading scorer Tiras Wade had to leave the game because of a hamstring injury.
Eventhough the Dragons are playing without Wade, they were leading by as much as 16 points when Donald Little made a basket to make it 65-49 with 5:11 left in the third quarter. Then Johnson heated up by scoring 11 points in the last four minutes of the third quarter to help the Patriots cut their deficit to 64-71 going into the fourth quarter.
The Patriots started the final quarter on a 17-3 run. Nakiea Miller made a free throw with 4:28 left on the clock to give the Patriots their biggest lead in the game at 81-74. The Dragons were able to answer with back to back three point shots from John Ng and Patrick Cabahug.
Nic Belasco gave the Dragons some hope after hitting a three-point shot to make it 87-89 with 7 seconds left. The Dragons then fouled Al Vergara who missed his second free throw but Dragons were not able to get the rebound as they lose their third straight game.
The Dragons will travel to Bangkok next Sunday the 25th of March 2012 as they take on the Chang Thailand Slammers at the Thai Japanese Association Gym. The Patriots will also be in action next Sunday when they play their fourth straight road game against the Jobstreet.com Singapore Slingers at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
